May 2, 2016 MINNEAPOLIS, MN – The Minnesota DFL Somali-American Caucus announced today that they are endorsing Ilhan Omar for the State Representative in District 60B.
“Ilhan Omar embodies our vision for the future of our district and our state. We have worked hand-in-hand with her to address the issues that our community faces, including developing employment opportunities, creating programs for youth who struggle, and finding solutions to reduce rates of incarceration. We are working collaboratively with our party in reducing racial disparity gaps and we need a champion like Ilhan to move the conversation forward. We look forward to having a powerful advocate who will authentically represent us at the Capitol and will actively carry our voices and our concerns forward.”
“I am honored and humbled to receive this endorsement from the DFL Somali-American caucus,” said Ms. Omar. “When elected, I will dedicate myself to reducing poverty rates in our district by finding avenues to create more jobs. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 26,000 Somali-Americans are living in poverty in Minnesota. And, in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood, the median household income is under $13,000 – substantially below that of an average white family in our state. This is unacceptable. Our current representative has had years to address this issue but has not.
“We must also put an end to the false premise that a person’s Islamic faith determines a propensity toward violence. We need a representative who will introduce legislation that will program funding through social service agencies, like every other community in Minnesota, not through law enforcement agencies. Every member of our district has something to contribute and, by working together on the challenges we face, we will make our community more prosperous and equitable.”
Ilhan is the only candidate in the race for State Representative in 60-B who has been endorsed by five DFL caucuses that represent the voices of marginalized communities in the district and state.
A progressive DFL activist, educator and policy analyst, Ilhan is the Director of Policy and Initiatives for the Women Organizing Women (WOW) Network, which works to engage and empower East African women to take civic leadership roles and see themselves as leaders within their communities. She lives in the West Bank neighborhood of Minneapolis with her husband and three children.
