Saint Paul, Minn. - The Minnesota Young DFL (MYDFL) is proud to endorse Ilhan Omar for State House in District 60B. Ilhan Omar embodies the values of the MYDFL not only by seeking office as a 33-year-old progressive but also by empowering and including other young DFLers in her campaign.
Ilhan Omar currently serves as the Director of Public Policy Initiatives for the Women Organizing Women (WOW) Network and has been a strong community leader in Minneapolis, working as a senior policy aide to Councilmember Andrew Johnson before beginning her campaign. She has also been deeply involved in DFL politics and local activism: she currently serves as the Vice President of the DFL Feminist Caucus and previously served as the SD60 Vice Chair and on the executive committee of the Minnesota Young DFL. In these positions, she showed a strong track record of engaging with students on issues important to MYDFL. In 2014, Omar was inducted into the DFL Women's Hall of Fame as a Rising Star for her contributions as an activist and leader in the party.
The MYDFL knows Ilhan Omar will bring new energy to the State Legislature. She has the passion, knowledge, and lived experience necessary to bring together all of the diverse voices in this district and ensure that their voices are heard. With the endorsement of Omar, MYDFL joins a growing list of community leaders that include Minneapolis Park Board Commissioner Brad Bourn, Minneapolis City Councilmember Alondra Cano, and Minneapolis NAACP President Nekima Levy-Pounds.
“Ilhan Omar has proven, not just in her campaign but in every aspect of her life, that she is a champion for the young people in the community,” said Quentin Wathum-Ocama, MYDFL President. “We are confident she will serve the community well and help bring unity to this very diverse district.”
MYDFL encourages its membership and party activists in 60B to attend DFL precinct caucuses, which will be held on March 1st. We also encourage individuals to become delegates to the Senate District 60 convention in order to support Ilhan Omar for the DFL endorsement.
Founded in 1947, the Minnesota Young DFL (MYDFL) is the official youth caucus of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party and is a chartered member of both the College Democrats of America and the Young Democrats of America. Membership in the MYDFL is open to any Democrat in the state of Minnesota who is 36 years old and under, or any person who is currently enrolled in college. The membership reflects the broad diversity of Minnesota and the party, including high school students, college students, workers, professionals, and families. It’s our mission to identify and advance progressive issues, develop and support young candidates, sustain community partnerships, and develop leadership in young progressive Minnesotans.
