GOP candidate suspends campaign in District 60B House race -- Statement from Ilhan Omar

AUGUST 29, 2016 MINNEAPOLIS – This past weekend, Ilhan’s Republican opponent, Abdimalik Askar suspended his campaign to attend to family issues.

“I wish Mr. Askar and his family well. Campaigning is a full-time job and I empathize with the pressure it puts on an individual and their family," said Ilhan Omar.

“Mr. Askar's campaign suspension doesn't change the task that lies in front of us.  From the beginning, our campaign has been dedicated to uniting the district and building a prosperous and equitable Minnesota.  We are making an effort, with the DFL, to take back the House so that come January we can advance an agenda focused on economic, social, racial, and environmental justice.  As well, we will continue that work here in our district by supporting the $15/hr ballot initiative and helping pass the education referendum."

Ilhan Omar, DFL-endorsed candidate to MN House – District 60B, is an experienced policy analyst, community educator and advocate. She currently serves as the Director of Policy Initiatives at Women Organizing Women, where she empowers East African women to take civic leadership roles in their community. She lives in the West Bank neighborhood of Minneapolis with her husband and three children.
