FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 20, 2016 MINNEAPOLIS, MN – Minneapolis City Council member Andrew Johnson announced today that he is endorsing Ilhan Omar for the DFL nomination for Minnesota House District 60B.
“I am proud to endorse Ilhan, who I have known for a number of years. I admire her drive, the strength of her values and convictions, and her progressive vision,” said Councilmember Johnson. “As the manager for my campaign, and as a senior policy aide, I have seen Ilhan in action. She knows how to listen to constituents and work hard on their behalf. She is a builder of bridges and has a special talent for bringing people together to get things done. Based on her character and accomplishments, and her abilities as a leader, I know she will make an excellent representative for all residents."
Ilhan Omar responded, “I’m honored and humbled to have received Councilmember Johnson’s endorsement. I know how dedicated Andrew is to being accessible and responsive to the concerns of his constituents. While working in his office, I had the opportunity to help advance important issues that are important to both Andrew and me, including green initiatives, restorative justice, a working families agenda, criminal justice reforms, and racial equity. These are issues I want to forward as House Representative in District 60B.”
Ilhan, a progressive DFL activist, educator and policy analyst, is the Director of Policy and Initiatives for the Women Organizing Women (WOW) Network, which works to engage and empower East African women to take civic leadership roles and see themselves as leaders within their communities. She lives in the West Bank neighborhood of Minneapolis with her husband and three children.
