St. Paul School Board Member Zuki Ellis Endorses Ilhan Omar for 60B

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 14, 2016 MINNEAPOLIS, MN – St. Paul School Board Member Zuki Ellis recently announced today that she is endorsing Ilhan Omar for the DFL nomination for Minnesota House District 60B.

"I met Ilhan last year at VoteRunLead, while I was preparing for my first run for office.  When she spoke, I heard urgency; I heard the voice of someone who could not wait patiently for her turn to serve her district.

The passion I heard wasn’t about promoting herself, but about building community.  Not just about the Somali community but all of us working together, because change needs to be happening.  We’re not seeing change that includes families that are immigrants who came here, as well as families that have lived here a long time, but whose voices still aren’t being heard.

Ilhan talked about building community in a way that was thoughtful -- not just one group, but about how we all can work together for the same goals and same ideas.

She wants to bring ideas from our community to the legislature, and to lead there on the issues most important to us."

Ilhan Omar responded, “I’m honored to receive St. Paul School Board Member Zuki Ellis’ endorsement.  She is an educational advocate and an ally for families and schools.  She knows the power of listening to students, parents, teachers, and other community members. She understands the need for all parties to have a seat at the table.  As mothers of children who attend our public schools, we know the urgency of providing a high quality education for all students. And we know we must close the opportunity gap so that all children can thrive and succeed.”

Ilhan, a progressive DFL activist, educator and policy analyst, is the Director of Policy and Initiatives for the Women Organizing Women (WOW) Network, which works to engage and empower East African women to take civic leadership roles and see themselves as leaders within their communities. She lives in the West Bank neighborhood of Minneapolis with her husband and three children.
