I’m numb with the news of two more senseless officer involved shootings, on Tuesday in Louisiana, and here in Falcon Heights last night.
Voices calling for justice were outside the governor’s mansion at 2:00 AM and they continue to stand.
We all need to stand.
After each shooting, our elected officials speak out against the pertaining incident and offer condolences. That is not enough. We need our leaders to take immediate action. We must change the culture of policing now.
We must ensure that the officers patrolling neighborhoods are representative of them. We must demand training on implicit bias for officers. I support a shift to community policing – I believe that if officers are stakeholders and proactive members of the communities they police, we will see a steep decline in events of this nature.
If you are looking for an action you can take today, a vigil is being planned for this afternoon at 5:30 PM at the JJ Hill Montessori Elementary, where Philando Castile worked, 998 Selby Ave. St. Paul 55104.
